2012 Update

Belize is making very good progress towards reducing child mortality. The country has already met the target of reducing the under-five mortality rate by two-thirds by 2015, and aims to further improve it.

Successes

Both infant and child mortality have shown decreasing trends over the years. The under-five mortality rate Belize has declined from 23.7 per 1,000 live births in 1990 to 22.5 per 1,000 live births in 2009, resulting in early achievement of the MDG target.

Children immunisation against measles increased from 69 in 1992 to 96.6 in 2009. Belize is on track to achieve the target of 100 per cent by 2015.

Priorities

The main causes of death occur in the neonatal period and inadequate nutrition is one of the leading causes.  Therefore, poverty reduction and boosting of maternal health programs are priorities to improve health and nutrition.
