Operationalize Actions for MDG Acceleration, Sanitation
What is the project about
An extension of the Applying MDG Acceleration Framework (MAF) Project, the "Operationalize Actions for MAF, Sanitation" Project focuses on increasing acceptable sanitation coverage in Belize and heightening awareness of effective sanitation practices in the achievement of MDG 7c. Often sanitation is overlooked as opposed to the provision and access to potable water, therefore this project in collaborating with the applying MAF project collectively addresses MDG 7c.
The objectives of the project are: a) Indigenous and climate vulnerable communities in central and southern Belize have access to improved sanitation service delivery systems and benefit from culturally acceptable sanitation and hygiene technologies; and b) Indigenous and climate vulnerable communities in central and southern Belize have capacities to conduct regular monitoring and reporting of sanitation standards in their communities.
What have we accomplished so far
1) Communication materials aimed at altering hygienic practices have been disseminated in consultation with UNICEF Belize.
2) An inventory of sanitation facilities has been compiled based on the World Health Organization's Communication For Behavioural Impact Methodology to ascertain sanitation practices and to assist in determining culturally acceptable facilities which would be introduced to communities in the Belize and Toledo Districts.
3) Community have participated in the determination of the design and functional features of sanitation facilities to ensure cultural and social acceptability.
