UNDP is pleased to announce that it is presenting the Red Ribbon Award to the deserving Productive Organization for Women in Action (POWA). POWA has been contributing, through its work to the achievement of Millennium Development Goal 6 of combating HIV/AIDS through its unique and consistent participatory community approach.

The Red Ribbon Award is a UNAIDS family initiative which seeks to recognize and celebrate outstanding community leadership and action on AIDS around the world, and POWA is one of these organizations.

This year, 720 nominations were received from community-based organizations all over the world for the Award. At the end of March 2010, an independent Technical Review Committee completed a thorough review process that selected twenty-five preliminary finalists based on the impact, sustainability and innovation of their work at the community level. Country representatives from UNAIDS, UNDP and UNFPA and civil society organizations in the field, contributed to the validation process of selected nominees.

It was at the XVIII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2010), held in Vienna, Austria, from 18 to 23 July 2010 that Belize’s POWA (Productive Organization for Women in Action) was selected as one of the 25 most exceptional and deserving community-based organizations for their work at the forefront of community action on AIDS. Not only was POWA selected for a US$5,000 Award, but it is also one of the five organizations receiving special recognition and an additional US $15,000.

Ms. Michelle Irving will be receiving the Red Ribbon Award on behalf of POWA on Saturday, December 18th, at an activity organized by the community, being held at Why-Not-Island in Dangriga Town, starting at 3 PM. It is an open community event, which will include cultural presentations, and we invite you to join us in celebrating the achievement of POWA on Saturday and in publicizing the achievement of this wonderful community based organization.
